Please let me know if your child is NOT running in this meet.
This meet will consist of indoor events only to get ready for
Flagstaff.
PARENTS please sign up with Lanise and/or Rhonda to work a
shift at the clerking table. We need everyone’s participation.
Last Call For Flagstaff – SIGN UP for Flagstaff. I have to send in
the rooming list on Thursday.
Spikes – If you have spikes that are too small, please bring them
to practice to be donated to another athlete.
Uniforms – Everyone needs to go get measured for their uniform.
Uniforms are the same as last year so if you have one already do
not go and get another one. If your uniform from last year does
not fit, please bring it to practice. Uniforms are supposed to be
turned in each year. Once you turn in your old uniform you can go
and get fitted for a new one. All high schoolers running after high
school will need to get fitted as well if you do not have one.
Please turn in your old one before getting fitted for a new one.
High schoolers get fitted only if you are running for sure.
Everyone should be fitted no later than Monday, February 4, 2008.
Please go to Movin USA, tell them you are with the Arizona
Cheetahs and they will know what to do. The team will purchase
and pick up the uniforms when they are ready.

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE
Our next target meet is Phoenix Invitationals, a 2 day meet to be held
on Saturday, April 5th and Sunday, April 6th. This is one of the
biggest meets of the season and it is mandatory that all athletes
compete. This is a point scoring meet and athletes will be placed in
events where we think they will score points. There will not be any
requests taken. Your child may be required to do events they
normally won’t do. Since this is a point scoring meet, it does not
make since to have 10 kids in the 100 or 200 when only 1 or 2 may
score or even make the finals. Points are only scored for the top 6
finishers. Please remember that your child may be able to make it to
regionals or even nationals in a different event. With all this in mind,
we need everyone to make sure that they are attending practice.
There will be athletes from all over competing at the Phoenix
Invitationals. More than at the Flagstaff meet.
If you have a complaint, please do not hold it in - address
immediately with Coach Norine or Coach Yative and not with other
parents or your kids as it breeds negativity and disrespect.
After this meet if you want your child to try an event - please let me
know and we will let them try it. Some parents will be approached
about what we want your child run in order to make it to the next level.
If we don't feel that it would be an individual event, they will be asked
to train for a specific relay. In the past we have had athletes who did
not make it in individual events out of state or regionals, but they
received a national medal as part of a relay - 4x100, 4x400 and
4x800. We have had 4 athletes on a 4x100 and none of them
qualified in the 100 but they got a national medal as part of the
4x100. The same thing has happened on a 4x400 where only 1
person made it in the open 400 but they received a national medal in
the 4x400. We also had it where only 1 or 2 were in the 100 and they
won the 4x100 in Nationals.
Please remember that only the top 3 in each event will qualify for
Regionals and the top 3 from there will qualify for Nationals. We
need your help in preparing for these meets. We are asking that
every night each athlete to stretch, and do crunches and push ups.
On Friday, Saturdays (when there is no meet), and Sundays we ask
that you add in wall sits (increasing time in position as strength
increases). All of this helps with their strength, form, and
coordination which will increase performance and maximize their
potential.
Training that you can done at home to help us with our goals is listed
below.
• Push-ups increase upper-body strength – particularly in the
chests, the front of our shoulders and the back of the arms. They can
also help with toning the abdominals and hip flexors if done properly.
• Crunches increase the abdominal strength - the abs play an
important role to our overall muscularity and strength. They help pull
the trunk of our body toward the lower body and are involved in every
exercise we do. It is the center of our strength.
• One of the greatest benefits of stretching is that you’re able to
increase the length of both your muscles and tendons. This leads to
an increased range of movement, which means your limbs and
joints can move further before an injury occurs, and stretching helps
you move with ease, power and grace. Stretching can help to prevent
an injury by promoting recovery and decreasing soreness and
ensures that your muscles and tendons are in good working order.
The more conditioned your muscles and tendons are, the better they
can handle the rigors of sport and exercise, and the less likely that
they'll become injured.
• The wall sits are used to strengthen and build endurance in the
lower body and the trunk of the body (the core). It strengthens
hamstrings, quadriceps, gluteal muscles, and abdominal muscles.
Improved strength means improved form and better performance.
As always, those who are ranked in the top 6 in the country as
compared to last years results at nationals will be able to receive
travel assistance. Here is a link to the result from last year's
Nationals in Walnut, CA http://www.usatf.
org/events/2007/USATFJuniorOlympicTFChampionships/results/ .
There is also a link to the Regional Results on this page. You can
use this to see where your child is. Please remember that our kids
will be getting better because the season has pretty much just
started.
